Gaylord Powless was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 9 in Calgary. Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day congratulated the Powless family and community of Six Nations on the occasion.

Powless played lacrosse from the 1060 to 1980s. Lacrosse is known as ‘the Creator’s Game’, reads a press statements from the Chiefs of Ontario, and is a gift from the Creator for his enjoyment and as a medicine game for healing the people.

According to the Iroquois National team, at the beginning of each season, players will ask the spirit of an animal for guidance so that he may have the eyes of the Hawk and the agility of the Deer. Often there is a blessing where sacred tobacco is placed into the fire so that the smoke will rise, carrying the message to the land of the Creator, the statement continues.
