LISTEN: Tom Jackson with Huron Carole works to feed hungry children

Tom Jackson

Artists who will appear with Jackson are Tom McKillip, Carly McKillip, Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell of Over The Moon, and Darren Savard.

Tom Jackson began the Huron Carole 31 years ago to help alleviate child hunger. Helping others seemed to fuel him. The annual Christmas show that tours Canada over the lead up to the holiday season is set to begin and has scheduled 15 dates from tonight Nov. 24 in Camrose, Alta. at the Festival of Trees –Camrose Regional Exhibition to Dec. 18 in Victoria, B.C.

Back some 30 years ago, it was the early stages of food banks. He was in Toronto and there was an organization called Council Fire, he told Jeremy Harpe of CJWE 88.1 Calgary. It served people in areas where there was a lot of poverty, including a lot of First Nations people.

Jackson reached out to Council Fire to get an idea of what they might need and was told they were short of food hampers for people. He thought to call some friends of his to put on a show to raise some money. It was Dec. 17, and he didn’t raise a lot of money, but did raise a lot of attention with media.

The next day there were cars and trucks for a kilometre delivering food.

As in past shows, this year’s show will include storytelling, laughter and a lot of music designed to lift the spirits of the audience.

Artists who will appear with Jackson are Tom McKillip, Carly McKillip, Suzanne Levesque and Craig Bignell of Over The Moon, and Darren Savard.
