Mental Health Patient Advocate

Alberta Health is seeking to fill the role of Alberta’s Mental Health Patient Advocate. As the ideal candidate, your commitment to advocacy will be essential in helping carry out the advocate’s legislative mandate to protect patient rights, investigate complaints, and report on investigations.
Reporting to the Minister of Health on legislative matters and to the Deputy Minister of Health on administrative issues, you will serve as an impartial body and as a resource for the mental health community. An exceptional capacity to build and maintain relationships will support your work with diverse stakeholders to address and help resolve complaints, as well as develop recommendations to improve mental health services and systems. Serving in a senior advisory capacity, you will provide information to the Minister and the ministry to drive the delivery of positive outcomes for patients subject to the Mental Health Act.
An influential and credible leader, your career reflects extensive senior leadership experience in a public serving organization, working with vulnerable populations including those with mental illness. You are recognized for your knowledge and skill in advocacy and mediation, as well as your experience in, and familiarity of, investigative and complaint resolution processes. Your reputation for delivering client-focused programming and initiatives is built on a foundation of collaboration and consultation with the many stakeholders that make-up Alberta’s mental health community. A related graduate degree and a strong understanding of current and emerging issues affecting patient rights and the health care system in our province are preferred.
The Mental Health Patient Advocate is appointed under Part 6 of the Mental Health Act. Remuneration is determined by the Lieutenant Governor in Council in accordance with the Interpretation Act. Final candidates for this Executive level opportunity will be required to undergo security, disclosure and conflict of interest screening. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies.
