Portage College has a unique opportunity on its Student Services team for an Indigenous Counsellor. Reporting to the Coordinator of Counselling Services, this position provides professional counselling for prospective and registered students regarding academic, career, personal, grief, loss and financial concerns.

  • Conduct interviews with prospective and registered students and provides help and information on the areas of counselling noted above; Provides crisis intervention as required.
  • Conduct group counselling sessions, including discussions, skills development, social development as well as workshops (i.e. job search techniques, anger management, student assistance for students experiencing problems with substance abuse).
  • Facilitate the development of cultural values, personal attitudes and skills of Indigenous students most conductive to self-directed problem-solving. Assists in the identification of the changing needs to Indigenous students with a view to planning and implementing programs and approaches best suited to these needs.
  • Participate on internal and external committees with an Indigenous focus.
  • Work as liaison for athletic program and student housing.
  • Provide counselling services to community campuses.
  • Provide lead event planning for round dance, honour ceremony, Virtual Elders and other events.


  • Bachelor or Master degree in psychology, counselling or social work. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Membership with a relevant professional association such as the Alberta College of Social Workers.
  • Minimum two year of related counselling experience working with Indigenous people.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and issues and the ability to work with Indigenous people in the role of counsellor - Ability to gain trust of students and community members.
  • Experience and ability to counsel adults on personal, substance abuse, grief, loss, career, educational and financial issues in both individual and group forums.
  • Experience and ability to interpret psychological testing results for the purpose of educational and career planning.
  • Experience instructing adults on various topics, such as anger management, stress management and job search techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, staff and community agencies.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong experience in crisis management.
  • Successful applicant will be required to provide a current police information check and driver’s abstract.
