Head of the Indigenous Screen Office

The Canada Media Fund, Aboriginal People Television Network, Telefilm Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Société Radio-Canada, National Film Board and Canadian Media Producers Association are partnering together with mainstream broadcasters (VICE, Bell) to create an Indigenous Screen Office. An Indigenous-run screen office would support the development, production and marketing of Indigenous features, short films, documentary, television and digital media content. The Office will begin as a coordinating body for relationship building and buy-in, moving toward a funding body with production dollars, contributing to a long-term mandate to develop Indigenous screenwriters, directors and producers. A primary task in the first year will be to develop a plan including outcomes to achieve the long-term mandate through consultation with the stakeholders and partners. The partners, together with an Indigenous Advisory selection committee, are seeking applicants for the position of Head of the Indigenous Screen Office.

 

Eligibility

The application process is open to all Indigenous people in Canada (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis). The nationwide call for applications will be reviewed by an Indigenous advisory group made up of film and television creators and producers from each region, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis representation.

 

Head of Indigenous Screen Office Job Description

The Head of the Indigenous Screen Office will provide strategic, creative and operational direction for the entity. As it becomes well established, the Head will have overall responsibility for development and investment decisions, and will oversee the management of projects from development and/or production investment through to delivery.

 

The core roles and responsibilities of the position will include: 

  • Establishing and maintaining strong and productive working relationships with a wide cross section of the production, distribution and broadcast sections of the industry, including relevant Indigenous stakeholders.
  • Fostering collaborative working relationships with peers, and facilitating co-operation and partnership with all external stakeholders.
  • Developing and implementing programs and initiatives that address the needs of the Indigenous screen industry and its practitioners.
  • Reviewing and advising on objectives, policies, strategies and practices to enhance Indigenous involvement and performance in the screen industry.
  • People management including leading, managing and building an effective, high-performing team.
  • Overall management of Indigenous Screen Office funding budget and decisions across programs.

Qualifications/ Experience Required

Knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, coupled with an understanding of the issues affecting Indigenous people in contemporary society and the diversity of circumstances in Indigenous communities.

 

Knowledge of the Indigenous screen industry with experience and skills in:

  • development and production, appraisal of scripts and cultural assessment;
  • familiarity with film and television financing models;
  • domestic and international market place knowledge and audience awareness.

 

Proven ability to keep abreast of, and respond to, trends and issues specific to the Indigenous screen sector, and provide leadership and guidance in respect of these.

 

Experience in engagement and the ability to forge partnerships and manage relationships.

 

Understanding of and experience working with Government processes, regulations and methodologies.

 

Excellent written and oral communication skills, combined with exceptional interpersonal skills.

 

Ability to represent the Indigenous Screen Office to industry and government with diplomacy, sensitivity, confidentiality and tact as required.

 

Demonstrable exceptional people management skills as well as leadership experience, with proven ability to inspire, engage and motivate a team.

 

Good knowledge in governance specially in reporting to various stakeholders that have different objectives and priorities.

 

Experience in project management.

 

Bilingual: Indigenous language or French and English
