About the Department of Child Studies and Social Work

Housed within the Faculty of Health, Community and Education, the Social Work Program at MRU is a nationally recognized, two-year diploma program, which combines knowledge and skills in social work, the humanities, and behavioral sciences. This generalist program prepares students for social work practice with individuals, families, groups, and communities. Employed in a broad range of government, non-profit, and community-based agencies, MRU Social Work diploma graduates are eligible to become Registered Social Workers in Alberta and receive transfer credit to several Bachelor of Social Work programs across Canada.
About the Role
The Department of Child Studies and Social Work at Mount Royal University (MRU) invites applications for a tenure track position in the Social Work Program at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing July 1, 2018 (subject to final budgetary approval). More than one tenure track or limited term position may be filled from this competition.
Applications are invited from those with an interest and background in teaching and research in one or more of the following social work areas:
- Indigenous Social Work: knowledge and understanding of complex Indigenous issues, values, worldviews, Elder and cultural protocols, and learning styles as they pertain to Canada.
- Unique Indigenous Social Work Practice
- Residential School and Intergenerational Issues
- Social Work with Families
- Group Facilitation
- Mental Health
- Anti-oppressive Social Work practice
It would also be an asset if the successful candidate had proficiency in an Indigenous language as well as knowledge of their respective cultures. Candidates who provide evidence of strong research, teaching and practice experiences outside of the areas identified above will also be considered. Evidence may include awards, letters of support, publication history, and international recognition.
New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service only. The successful candidate will be hired into the teaching/ service pattern (TS). There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.
PhD or ABD in Social Work or related field is preferred. The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a practicing social worker. Applicants must be eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
The successful applicant must be qualified to teach across the curriculum, be willing to lead course and program development, and be committed to developing strong community partnerships.
For this search, we have a strong preference for hiring a candidate suitable for the TS work pattern. The teaching/service (TS) pattern has a focus on teaching and service only. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.
